After the ice breaker workshop the whole group was split randomly into two groups, one group went off to take part in an active workshop which involved making scarf’s about issue that they had heard about in the news or concern them, for instance; global warming, poverty or fair-trade. The other group were given a talk and presentation on Africa by two people that had been there to look at the work CAFOD had been doing, the group also got to try on some traditional African clothing. The two groups then switched workshops. Once each workshop had been completed it was time for pizza and then good byes.

Cafe Bar Preston

Cafe Bar - On the 25th of January WDY went for a meal out to Cafe Bar, in Preston Town center. We went with the older group Impact!. Cafe Bar is an Italian resturant which serves AMAZING food! We usually hold our meetings at St. Clares social center, so it was nice to get out and let off some steam. We do go out as a group quit often so that we aren't always in the Social Center. This is good as we can bond as a group in what wouyld probably be our natural environment. It was also great to get together with the older group and see how their group works - Emily Read, member of WDY

Impact and WDY Link evening in Manchester

The Manchester Trip was a great, fun and intresting trip
Dec, Emily, Rosie, Antonia and Oliva all went to manchester with Terry and Josie to meet another YCW Impact! youth group.
When at Manchester we talked with the other two groups which we met, about making a link in the diocese. Terry went on about how he thought we could do so. If we do create the link between the two groups our group will benefit greatly. This is because we will meet new friends, be able to go to places like castlerigg & brettargh halt, with the groups and maybe involve more groups in our diocese. - Emily Read, member of WDY

Bike Challenge

On Monday the 26th of half term, Charlie Nickson set off cycling to
Durham. Durham is just over 100 miles away, heading North too
Lancaster then cutting through Yorkshire and turning North once again.
He set off at 9am (everyone needs a lie in) by Lunchtime he was around
30 miles into his journey, but from this point the terrain started too
become very unpredictable and keeping too the average speed was no
longer an option. By 3:30pm Charlie had only made around 50 miles of
his journey, exhaustion was kicking in and 5 miles later he just couldn’t
go any further. Since there was no way he could make another 50 miles
before darkness he was forced too find somewhere to stay the night.
Unfortunately due to plans that had been made he didn’t have time too
finish, only cycle back home. But hopefully this sponsored event will
still bring some money into Impact.

Homelessness Project

Young people from Preston’s IMPACT Youth Group took part in a Youth Aloud Project and travelled to Malta this summer where they visited the Mosta Zak group. The theme of their trip was ”Being Young – Creating a Positive Environment”. Supported by Connect Youth Exchange Action 1.1, through the British Council, they explored issues around the environment and their responses as young people, including the Climate Justice campaign which CAFOD is carrying forward. Youth workers Emily Forbes and Sarah Kane led an art workshop which illustrated the journey of climate justice from where we are now to where we’d like to be. They produced a colourful banner which they hope to take to London on 5th December to The Wave March with the Stop Climate Chaos Coalition, ahead of the UN Summit in Copenhagen.

During their visit to Malta the young people visited a recycling plant and also planted trees.

“We had an amazing time being with our Maltese friends. We’ve forged many new friendships and learnt lots along the way about climate justice issues. ” remarked youth worker Emily Forbes, ” It really is just one world and how we treat the planet matters right now.”

A big ‘Thank you’ to all of the young people for their enthusiastic engagement in the project!

There were also workshops in the afternoon and a chance to reflect on the day. Then the group went to Pizza Express in Euston before returning to Preston exhausted!!

The Young Talents of Europe
Published Date: 23 April 2009
Talented youngsters from around Europe gathered at a Preston high school to show off their skills.
Our Lady's Catholic High School in St Anthony's Drive, Fulwood, was the venue for the International Youth Festival, featuring around 80 young people. Pupils from schools in Finland and Germany joined their Preston counterparts for African drumming, art and dance.

Terry Mattinson, who was involved in organising the event, said: "It was about young people coming together and looking at how young people cope with being young."

African Youth Mass – May 2008
Some 30 young people in Preston were involved in an African Mass on 11 May. Hosted by St Clare's, the young people learned African drumming and made hangings with the word 'Harambee': a Swahili word meaning "pull together" or "heave ho!" - a fresh take on solidarity.
The young people were from Wicked Dynamic Youth at St Clare's and St Edward's Impact! Youth Groups, which welcome young people from all over Preston.
In the run-up to the Mass there were a series of workshops. For several weeks, Diane Camara introduced African Drumming and this was used in the Youth Mass. It got the young people engaged with African culture and African everyday life.
The aim of the Mass was to introduce the idea that the Catholic Church is wider than our experience on a Sunday suggests. As a Church, our liturgy may be broadly similar, but the interpretations are massively different. Preparation for the Mass also explored the meaning of solidarity and connected it to a life of faith. Thanks to Fr. Bernard Woods, Fr. Dick Kinlen and Fr. Ted Wildsmith
